What Are the 7 Factors That Limit Muscle Growth?

Table of Contents

Muscle-building limiting factors are physical or behavioural factors that may prevent muscles from increasing to their full potential, even when a person exercises and consumes sufficient protein.

The key factors that may affect muscle building can be divided into seven groups:

1. Insufficient Protein or Energy

Muscle building requires adequate protein, essential amino acids and energy. If the body does not receive enough, this may affect muscle protein synthesis, including:

  • Insufficient protein intake
  • Insufficient essential amino acids (EAAs) or leucine
  • Insufficient energy intake

When the body does not receive enough protein or energy, muscle protein synthesis (MPS) may decrease.

2. Inappropriate Resistance Training

Exercise for muscle building requires an appropriate training programme and intensity. If training is not suitable, the muscles may not receive sufficient stimulation, for example:

  • Using weights that are too light
  • Failing to progressively increase resistance (Progressive Overload)
  • Training inconsistently
  • Not allowing sufficient recovery time

These factors may limit improvements in strength and muscle mass.

3. Hormonal Imbalance

Several hormones play important roles in muscle building, maintenance and breakdown.

Low levels of Testosterone, Free Testosterone or IGF-1, thyroid hormone abnormalities, or chronically elevated Cortisol may affect the balance between muscle building and muscle breakdown, making it more difficult to increase muscle mass.

4. Deficiencies in Essential Vitamins and Minerals

Many vitamins and minerals are involved in energy production, muscle function and the body’s recovery processes, including:

  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin B12
  • Folate
  • Iron
  • Magnesium
  • Zinc

Insufficient levels of these nutrients may affect energy production, muscle function and recovery after exercise.

5. Insufficient Sleep and Recovery

Muscle building does not occur only during exercise. The body also requires adequate recovery time to repair and build muscle tissue. Factors that may interfere with recovery include:

  • Insufficient sleep
  • Poor sleep quality
  • High levels of stress
  • Excessive exercise or training

When the body does not have enough time to rest and recover, the processes involved in muscle repair and growth may be reduced.

6. Metabolic and Inflammatory Factors

Metabolic and inflammatory factors can affect how muscles respond to protein and exercise. Examples include:

  • Insulin Resistance
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Certain chronic diseases

These conditions may interfere with nutrient utilisation, as well as the muscles’ response to exercise and their ability to build muscle.

7. Age and Anabolic Resistance

เมื่ออายุมากขึ้น กล้ามเนื้ออาจตอบสนองต่อโปรตีนและการออกกำลังกายลดลง ภาวะนี้เรียกว่า Anabolic Resistance

As people age, muscles may become less responsive to protein and exercise. This is known as Anabolic Resistance.

Therefore, as people get older, it is particularly important to focus on Resistance Training and an appropriate intake of high-quality protein to help maintain and support muscle mass.

Biomarkers Can Help Identify the “Weak Points” in Muscle Building

Biomarker testing can help assess some of the factors that may limit muscle building, such as:

  • Total Protein
  • Albumin
  • CBC / Iron Study
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin B12
  • Folate
  • Magnesium
  • Zinc
  • Glucose / HbA1c
  • Testosterone + SHBG
  • IGF-1
  • Cortisol
  • Thyroid Profile

However, these results should be assessed alongside other factors, such as muscle mass, muscle strength, dietary patterns, sleep quality and exercise habits, to provide a more comprehensive picture of the factors that may affect muscle building in each individual.

Summary

The key concept when trying to increase muscle mass is not simply to ask, “Are you getting enough protein?” Instead, it is important to identify the factors that may be limiting muscle building — the individual’s Limiting Factors.

Identifying these limiting factors can help with more appropriate planning of nutrition, exercise, recovery and overall health management, supporting the body’s ability to build and maintain muscle mass to its full potential.
