Rhabdomyolysis is a condition in which skeletal muscles are severely damaged, causing essential substances inside the muscle cells—such as myoglobin and various enzymes—to leak into the bloodstream. This may lead to serious complications such as acute kidney failure or cardiac arrhythmia.
The Rhabdomyolysis Screening Program is designed to assess and detect abnormalities at an early stage. It is suitable for individuals at risk, such as athletes, people who exercise or exert themselves excessively, patients taking certain medications, or those with suspected muscle damage.
Comprehensive and accurate testing allows for timely treatment planning and prevention of complications, ensuring your safety and well-being.
Tests included in the program:
- Creatine phosphokinase (CPK) — muscle enzyme level
- Myoglobin — to assess muscle breakdown or myocardial infarction
- Kidney function tests (BUN, Creatinine)
- Liver enzyme tests (ALT, AST)
Preparation before the test:
- No need to fast from food or water.
- Provide a detailed medical history, e.g., when the fever started, the presence of muscle pain, bruising, or other symptoms, as well as any heavy activity or exercise within the past 48 hours.
- If you have been tested before, bring previous results for comparison.
- Inform the healthcare provider about any current medications, especially antipyretics (e.g., paracetamol), NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, aspirin), statins, or any drugs that may affect the muscles or test results.
- Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before the test.
- If you have chronic illnesses such as heart, kidney, or liver disease, inform the healthcare provider in advance.
- Get adequate sleep (6–8 hours) before the test.
- Wear clothing that allows easy access for blood collection.
